2017 has been a busy year so far. At an exciting Paris Air Show Airbus achieved $40bn of new commercial aircraft orders. We are very pleased to announce an additional 10 A350's for Ethiopian Airlines, a strong endorsement for our A350 XWB Family. We are equally happy to support the continued development of the commercial aviation industry in Iran with commitments from Iran Airtour for 45 aircraft and Zagros Airlines for 28 aircraft. We wish each of these airlines a strong and successful future.
The airshow also revealed the A380plus which is a package of enhancements for our most iconic aircraft resulting in a 13% cost per seat benefit versus today's A380. More info inside this edition of asfaar.
It seems the busy times are set to continue as air traffic continues to outpace GDP growth. RPK's grew a healthy 6.3% in 2016 vs. 2015, representing an impressive total of 3.7 billion passengers carried by air in 2016. Global passenger traffic is forecast to grow at an annual average rate of 4.4% for the next 20 years. The growth in passenger & freight traffic translates into demand for nearly 35,000 new aircraft by 2036.
For an in-depth analysis on air traffic and aircraft demand, I invite you to read this issue of Asfaar which focuses on the 2017-2036 Airbus Global Market Forecast. On www.airbus.com we have also developed an interactive app - so you can have this information at your fingertips at all times.
I wish you a good summer break.
